Book Club No. 2 - Sunburn #44
This month's book club pick is Sunburn, a coming-of-age story set in 1990s rural Ireland about a teenage girl discovering her queerness in a world where it doesn't feel accepted. The book brought up what it means to feel far away from yourself before you ever feel far from other people, why the intensity of first love doesn't have to be tied to age, and how family and community expectation quietly shape who we let ourselves become. It's a story about identity, sexuality, and self-discovery, but underneath it's really about the same question I keep coming back to lately: when do we follow love, and when do we choose the status quo instead.
Key Themes:
• This month's read, Sunburn, and what drew me to it
• Discovering your identity in a place where the words for it are still taboo
• The intensity of love
• Choosing love against family, community, or religious expectation
• Learning to see your parents as full people
